Malaya Banknote 1941 & 1942

The Board of Commissioners of Currency Malaya was established in 1938. The Board commenced to issue currency in 1939 to replace the Strait Settlement currency. All the notes issued by the Board bore the portrait of King George VI (1936-1952). These paper money were issued in denominations in Cents and Dollars.

During the Japanese occupation (1942-1945), the Japanese introduced its own currency. The currency was fix at 1 Japanese Yen = 1 Malayan dollars. However, after the British regained their status in Malaya States, the Japanese occupation currency was declared worthless and the Malayan dollars was reinstated its value relative to sterling.

There were two types of Malayan currency issued by the Board in different dates. One was issued in 1940 with the denominations in 10 cents, 25 cents, 1 dollar, 5 dollars and 10 dollars. Due to the war in Europe, these notes were barely circulated in Malaya States. Another type of note was issued in 1941 and 1942 with the denominations in 1 cent, 5 cents, 10 cents, 20cents, 50 cents, 1 dollar, 5 dollars, 10 dollars, 50 dollars, 100 dollars, 1000 dollars and 10000 dollars. Eventhough they were printed in 1941 and 1942, these notes were only been issued in 1945 after the British had regained their control in the States.

The following are the notes issued in 1941 and 1942. The note of 1 cent, 5 cents and 10 cents do not have any printing on the back side.

Dear Jack,
I am doing a research on St. John history dating back to post-WW II in Malaya. I found a reference to some cash that they had at that time, abt $9,000 (presumably this is the Straits Settlement currency). How much is this $9,000 in today's term?

Also, a reference of British Pound 1,000 at that time. What's this value in today's term?

I just bought a 20 cents UNC banknote, 1st July 1941 and when I measured it the dimensions were 114.5 mm x 76.5 mm which is slightly differ from the original dimensions given of 114 mm x 76 mm. Could this be a common variation with old notes? or have I just bought a forgery?

Please advice?

Thanks!

Hi Mytrainmaster, it is a tough question. Image back then a plate of mee cost about 5 to 10 cents as compare to RM3 to RM4 nowaday. Perhaps, another way of calculating it is through the average inflation from year to year at 3% or 4% which compound annually. Let you do the math!

Jack Hoo said...

Hi Amos, it is hard to tell whether the banknote that you have is a forgery by just looking at the dimension itself.

Having said that, the note printed by Thomas De La Rue should be quite standard in size. Anyway, yours is only deviated by 0.5mm. I suppose you should into other elements to determine ehther it is genuine.
